What Is My Company Registration Number on Amazon?
You’re filling out your Amazon seller account application.
You select your business type.
You enter your legal business name.
And then Amazon asks for your company registration number.
This is where a lot of businesses get stuck.
Is that your EIN?
Your sales tax ID?
Something on your LLC paperwork?
If you enter the wrong number here, your seller account application will likely get rejected.
This is, by far, the most common issue I see that causes Amazon seller account applications to be denied. I’ve helped dozens — probably hundreds — of brands through this process, and this one field causes more rejections than anything else.
Let’s clear it up completely.
Why This Field Causes So Much Confusion
The main problem is terminology.
Amazon calls it a “company registration number.”
But almost no state or country actually uses that phrase.
Instead, your state might call it:
- File Number
- Entity Number
- Document Number
- Control Number
- ID Number
None of those say “company registration number.”

So business owners start scanning their formation documents looking for something labeled exactly that. They don’t find it.
Then they assume:
“It must be my EIN.”
And that’s where things go wrong.
After you submit your application, Amazon tries to validate your entity against the public state database. If the number you entered doesn’t match the state registry, the system flags it — and your application gets rejected.
It’s that Amazon uses a generic term, and every state uses a different label for the same thing.

What the Company Registration Number Actually Is
It is the unique number assigned by your state (or country) when your legal entity was formed. If you have an LLC or a Corporation, the day your entity was officially created and registered, the government assigned it a number. That number:
- Stays with the entity for its entire life
- Is issued by your state’s Secretary of State (or equivalent authority)
- Is public record
- Is used to identify your business in the government registry
It is not issued by the IRS. When you enter this number in Amazon’s seller application, Amazon’s system checks it against the public business registry database to confirm:
- The entity exists
- The entity is active
- The legal name matches
- The registered address matches
What It Is NOT (The Most Common Mistake)
- ❌ EIN (Employer Identification Number)
- ❌ Federal Tax ID
- ❌ Sales tax permit number
- ❌ Resale certificate number
- ❌ DBA registration number
- ❌ Social Security number
If you were about to enter your EIN in this field, stop. That is the single most common mistake I see.
Where to Find Your Company Registration Number
1️⃣ Your Original Formation Documents
Look at your Certificate of Organization or Articles of Organization for an LLC. For a corporation it would be a Certificate or Articles of Incorporation.
2️⃣ Your State’s Business Registry Website
- Go to Google
- Type your state name followed by “business entity search”
- Click the official .gov site

4. On the website, you may need to navigate to their search option. On the Massachusetts website, they have a button "search the corporate database" and we would click that.

5. Enter your exact legal business name in the search within the state website.

The Registration Extract Requirement
Later in the application, Amazon will ask you to upload a document called a registration extract.

Image above: Example of a registration extract Amazon accepts.
This document must:
- Show your legal business name
- Show your registered address
- Show your company registration number
All three must match exactly what you entered earlier in the application.

If You’re Operating as a DBA or Individual
If you do not have an LLC or Corporation, you do not have a company registration number.
You should select:
“None, I am an individual.”

If you select that option, Amazon will not ask you for a company registration number.
