Item Package Quantity and Unit Count are two different fields that are needed to be filled in when adding products into the inventory. Some sellers get confused about what value they should put on each of these fields. While the fields seem harmless, they aren’t, this is because a wrong item package quantity and unit count may result in confusion, unsatisfied customers, and incredibly frustrating error messages on seller central.
What is Package Quantity?
Package quantity or item package quantity refers to the number of items that are being offered for sale. Each package will have its own barcode.
For example, let’s say you are selling a water bottle. If the customer receives one water bottle after purchasing the product, the package quantity would be 1. If you were to look up the UPC barcode for that water bottle, it would refer to one water bottle.
Now let’s say you are selling a dietary supplement with 30 capsules in a bottle. If you are selling one bottle with 30 capsules, then the package quantity would still be “1” What if you wanted to sell a two-pack of a supplement to encourage people to buy two at a time? In that case, if you were to list that same supplement as a two-pack, with the same UPC code, the package quantity should be “2”.
Some things to remember:
- Once you set the package quantity when you make an ASIN, you can never change it.
- Customers can’t see the value you put in the package quantity field. However, it is best practice to always make sure the customers know how many they are getting for their purchase by adding it in the name of the product. In most cases, if you do put the incorrect number in the package quantity field when the ASIN is first created, there’s no real effect on the ASIN.
- Rouge sellers can create duplicate listings, however, the way they do it is by indicating a different package quantity.
- In cases where a seller created an incorrect listing, you can sometimes create another ASIN for the same product but without using another UPC. However, when you do this, you are required to use the Amazon Barcode instead of the manufacturer’s barcode whenever you utilize FBA.
What is Unit Count?
Unit count simply means that it is the amount per product. So, taking the example above, if you are selling a pack of fruit juice that contains 500 fluid ounces, then the count would be “500” and the count type would be “fluid ounces.”
Possible scenario when you put in the wrong quantity and unit count
Properly indicating the package quantity and the unit count will eliminate confusion and you’ll run into fewer errors when created listings. It also helps ensure, in times when Amazon shows the “price/oz” or similar comparisons, the information will be accurate.
